There used to be a lot more lightning bugs.
What I was a kid, there'd be hundreds, thousands of them. They filled my front yard like the stars filled the sky. My sister and I would go out into the yard on the warm Summer nights and it seemed that all we had to do was wave our jars around to catch as many as we wanted. And, if we missed one, there were plenty more for us to chase.
There used to be so many of the things.
I wonder where they all went.
Life provides its own metaphors.
I'd been meaning to write abt the lightning bugs for a couple weeks now...but always forget. We've been outside alot lately and I'd forgotten how cool they are. We actually have alot more this year than in years past...I'd almost thought it was reminiscent of how many we had at the old property.

remind me to bring my photo-album with me next time I come in to DAVEFEST. It's actually a catalog of my mother's work. She did a great painting of lightening bugs in the yard in front of the lillies. It was pretty cool, although I don't know how well you can see it all in the photo of the painting. Anyway... yeah, I remember seeing myriads of them twinkling like mad in the yard. I never see so many any more. I thought maybe it was because I live in the city now, or something. Maybe there are less of them. I wonder.

There certainly seem to be a loss less of them now. Maybe it's just that, with my nearsightedness, I can't seem them as well. Or maybe it's just that I'm not looking with the eyes of a child anymore.
