I've got to do something about this schedule I've been keeping. It's just not working. By the time the weekend comes around, I don't want to do anything but sleep for 48 hours. And that's even going to bed early, sometimes as early as 8:00 PM, on weeknights.

It's not like I'm really missing anything by going to bed so early, but it could happen, maybe. That thought nags at me when I go to bed and turn off the sounds on my phone.

There are things I like about getting up at 5:00 AM. First, I like that I don't feel rushed at all. I could probably sleep until 7:30 most mornings, but then I'd have to rush getting showered and shaved and dressed and out the door. I'd have to hope that there were no traffic problems, and then I'd have to go straight in to work as soon as I arrived.

Taking my time is much better. I leave my house by 7:00. Only very rarely is traffic bad enough to make me worry about being late. I get to work between 7:30 and 8:00, and I sit in the parking lot for a while. It's my favorite part of the day, that time before I go into the building.

But, I've been thinking, if I want to leave my house by 7:00, I could sleep until 6:30 and still manage that feat. Getting up at 5:00 gives me time to relax before I have to start getting ready for work, but lately I've been thinking that those extra 90 minutes would serve me better if they were tacked on to the end of the day instead of first thing in the morning.

I'll keep you all posted. Try not to fall off the edge of your seats.

Man, I wish I were one of those people who could wake up earlier than I need to and do things at a relaxed pace. I've tried and I can never seem to get up before I absolutely have to do so.

As it is, I generally wake up at 7:55 or so, get dressed, brush my teeth, comb my hair, wave a flat-iron at it, fly down two flights of stairs, drive like a maniac, and show up at work at precisely 8:30. It's never a good way to start the day.

I think you should wake up a couple of hours earlier. That way you could make it for last call at Rich O's and you won't feel like you're missing anything. Just a thought.

N: That's what I used to do at my last job. I hated it, but I still kept doing it.

A: I think last call at Rich O's is around 11:00.

I'm hoping that I'll get out of that habit once Scott and I (finally!) move in together in a few months. He's not exactly an early riser, but he's also not a fan of the last-minute lifestyle I currently practice.

I can understand why this is eating at you -- balancing work life, sleep and down time is an art. But so is compromise. Why don't you try getting up at 5am, leaving for work by 5:30, then sleeping in your car for 90 minutes? Actually, if you check craigslist you might be surprised at how cheaply you could buy a used RV for this approach. Another compromise would be to get up at 5:45 and stay up 45 minutes later. Or, one week, get up at 5am on M-W-F, and 6:30am on T-Th, then switch days the next week. Personally, I have an RV, so I would opt to get to work early and sleep in there, but that's just me.

I'll pretty much approve anything except SPAM comments, or comments that clearly have no purpose except to piss me off, or comments that are insulting to a previous commenter.

Use anything you want for your name and email address. I think it has to at least look like a valid email address though.
